The faculty of medicine was founded in 1972 as it constituted a historic event to the process of medical education in Somalia. The purpose of faculty was: to provide social medical services for the community through producing qualified medical professionals that realized a visible development in the field of health and medical science in that era.
The government of Somalia used to provide free health services for its Somalia citizens through professional graduated from the faculty of medicine and those from abroad. Besides, the health services of the country were in high standards that covered all various health needs of Somali people.
The fall of Central Government followed the destruction of medical institutions including medical faculty, hospitals and government Clinique that resulted in the absence of medical faculty for a quarter of century during which period Somalia people Somalia people faced tragic problems including absence of health and medical care augmented by lack of legislative body which could formulate policies and control systems of health programs in Somalia.
To train health professionals to meet the needs and improve the care of those whom they serve.
To strive for professional excellence while contributing to the social, economic, and cultural development of the country and inculcating in graduates an attitude of lifelong learning, ethical conduct, and excellence in service and research.
Provide general medical training to students and orient them towards community health care priorities and meet high international standards of quality.
Promote a patient-centered clinical method.
At the end of the MBBS course, the learner shall be able to:
Diagnose and manage common health problems of the individual and the community appropriate to his/her position as a member of the health team at primary, secondary and tertiary levels;
Be competent to practice preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative medicine in respect to the commonly encountered health problems;
The Faculty of Medicine Sciences is headed by the Dean, as chief executive officer, who is accountable to the Rector and the Vice Rector, as well as the University Council, for the plans and programmes of the Faculty and for its day-to-day operations. He is assisted in his duties by three Vice-Deans (Administrative Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Clinical Sciences), two Directors (Research, Translations and Publications, and Graduate Studies).
The MBBS course comprises 6 years (one year premedical subjects and 5 years of medical study, followed by compulsory rotatory internship of one year. The course follows semester system, each semester consisting of six months. The MBBS course is divided in to three phases, viz., Pre-clinical, Para-clinical and Clinical Phase, during which following subjects are introduced:
