Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science
About The Faculty
The Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences is one of the oldest and most important faculties of Somali National University. Originally established as the Faculty of Agriculture in 1971, it was created to support Somalia’s agricultural development, increase food production, reduce poverty, and minimize dependence on food imports and food aid. Over the years, the faculty has produced skilled professionals who have contributed to the expansion of cropland, the improvement of cereal production, and the application of modern agricultural techniques across the country.
Following the collapse of the academic system during the civil war in 1991, Somali National University was re-opened in 2014, and the faculty was renamed the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. This change reflected the growing need to address both agricultural development and environmental challenges, especially food insecurity, climate change, land degradation, and natural resource management. The faculty currently consists of key academic areas, including General Agriculture, Environmental Science, and related specialized fields that support national development priorities.
Today, the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences plays a leading role in preparing competent, visionary, and competitive graduates who can contribute to solving Somalia’s agricultural and environmental problems. The faculty currently offers undergraduate programs in Bachelor of Agriculture Science, Bachelor of Environmental Science, and Bachelor of Plant Protection. It is also working to establish new departments, including Soil Science and Crop Production, as well as future postgraduate programs in General Agriculture and Environmental Science to strengthen research, innovation, and professional training in the country.
Departments
The Faculty of agriculture contains four departments and they are:
The Department of General Agriculture is the oldest academic department in the faculty, originally established in 1971 and re-established after the reopening of Somali National University. The department trains agricultural experts in crop production, soil and water conservation, natural resource management, pest and disease control, and extension services, with the aim of improving agricultural productivity and supporting farmers across Somalia.
The Department of Plant Protection focuses on protecting crops from pests, diseases, and other production constraints that threaten food security and environmental health in Somalia. The department prepares qualified graduates with practical and scientific skills in pest identification, pest risk analysis, integrated pest management, research, consultancy, and climate-smart plant protection practices.
The Department of Environmental Science was established to address environmental challenges at local, regional, and global levels. The department provides students with knowledge and skills in environmental conservation, climate change adaptation, natural resource management, environmental governance, and sustainable development, preparing graduates to support informed decision-making and responsible environmental practices.
