Overview

Gaheyr Campus is the historic flagship campus of Somali National University (SNU) and one of Somalia’s most significant centers of higher education. Located at KM 6 along the Afgooye Road in Mogadishu, the campus has served as the heart of academic excellence, research, and national development since its establishment in 1971. It has long been recognized as the main campus of the university, hosting several faculties, administrative offices, lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, and student facilities.

Throughout its history, Gaheyr Campus has educated thousands of professionals who have gone on to become leaders in government, education, healthcare, engineering, business, and public service across Somalia and beyond. Before the interruption of university operations in 1991, the campus was a vibrant academic community that symbolized the country’s commitment to higher education and innovation.

Following the reopening of Somali National University in 2014 and the official return of the campus to the Federal Government in 2017, Gaheyr Campus has undergone continuous rehabilitation and modernization. Today, it is being transformed into a modern learning environment equipped with improved academic facilities, digital infrastructure, research laboratories, and collaborative learning spaces that support quality education and scientific advancement.

As the university continues to expand, Gaheyr Campus remains a cornerstone of SNU’s mission to provide accessible, high-quality education, foster innovative research, and produce graduates who contribute to Somalia’s sustainable development. The campus combines its rich historical legacy with a forward-looking vision, creating an environment where students, researchers, and faculty work together to address national and global challenges through knowledge, innovation, and community engagement.
