Faculty of Engineering

About The Faculty

The Faculty of Engineering at Somali National University (SNU) was established in 1974 to educate highly skilled engineers capable of contributing to Somalia’s infrastructure, industrial development, and technological advancement. Since its establishment, the Faculty has played a significant role in producing engineering professionals and supporting national development through quality education, research, and community engagement.

The Faculty originally comprised four academic departments: Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Architectural Engineering. Over the years, it experienced steady growth in undergraduate education, research, and technical outreach activities, becoming one of the University’s leading professional faculties.

Following the collapse of the Somali government and the outbreak of the civil war in 1991, the Faculty suspended its academic operations. After the reopening of Somali National University in 2014, the Faculty of Engineering was re-established in 2016, welcoming its first new cohort of students and renewing its commitment to engineering education and innovation.

Today, the Faculty provides modern engineering education that combines scientific knowledge, practical laboratory work, design projects, field experience, and professional ethics. Its mission is to produce competent engineers who can design sustainable solutions, address national infrastructure challenges, promote technological innovation, and contribute to Somalia’s economic growth and development.

Programs

The Faculty of Engineering offers four undergraduate bachelor’s degree programs:

Bachelor of Civil Engineering

The Bachelor of Civil Engineering is a four-year undergraduate program focused on the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects. Students study structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation, surveying, water resources, environmental engineering, and construction management. Graduates contribute to the development of roads, bridges, buildings, water systems, and other essential infrastructure.

Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering

The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering is a four-year undergraduate program that prepares students to design, manufacture, operate, and maintain mechanical systems. The curriculum covers mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing processes, materials science, machine design, and renewable energy technologies. Graduates are prepared for careers in manufacturing, energy, transportation, construction, and industrial engineering.

Bachelor of Electrical Engineering

The Bachelor of Electrical Engineering is a four-year undergraduate program that provides students with a strong foundation in electrical power systems, electronics, telecommunications, control systems, and renewable energy technologies. Through laboratory work and practical projects, students develop the technical skills required to design, operate, and maintain modern electrical and electronic systems in various industries.

Bachelor of Architectural Engineering

The Bachelor of Architectural Engineering is a four-year undergraduate program that integrates architecture, engineering, and sustainable building design. Students learn architectural design, building technology, structural systems, environmental design, construction materials, and urban planning. The program prepares graduates to create functional, safe, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally sustainable buildings that meet the needs of modern society.
