Mogadishu, March 18, 2026 — The Faculty of Science at Somali National University has reached a new milestone in international research collaboration. The Applied Chemistry Department has been awarded a prestigious Mitacs project focused on air pollution, officially announced on March 18, 2026, with implementation beginning March 30, 2026.

This initiative is being carried out in partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and will provide advanced training for intern Ustaad Mohamed Kassim Awow in the analysis of metal contamination in settled dust. The project will be supervised locally by Dr. Amina Sekaly, while Professor Julia Lu of TMU will serve as the host supervisor.

The collaboration represents a significant step toward strengthening academic and research ties between Somali National University and TMU. Beyond its immediate scientific goals, the project is expected to foster capacity building, knowledge exchange, and advancements in environmental chemistry.

Faculty leaders expressed optimism about the broader impact of the initiative, noting that it will enhance both research and training opportunities while contributing to global efforts in tackling air pollution.

As the project moves forward, Somali National University looks forward to the positive outcomes this partnership will bring to environmental studies and the academic community at large.
