Faculty of Science
About The Faculty
The Faculty of Science is one of the historic academic foundations of Somali National University. Its roots lie in the university’s early science programmes, with Chemistry introduced in 1971 and Geology in 1973. The Faculty of Sciences was launched at Gaheyr Campus in 1974, bringing together fields such as geology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology. It was founded to build national scientific expertise and prepare graduates to serve Somalia’s development.
The collapse of the Somali state in 1991 severely disrupted higher education, and the university could not function as before for more than two decades. Laboratories, academic programmes and research activity were all affected, leaving the country with a serious shortage of trained scientists and technical professionals.
After SNU reopened in 2014, university management decided in 2019 to reopen the faculty, beginning with Geology and Marine Science. It has since grown to include Mathematics, Computer Science and Applied Chemistry. Based at the Gaheyr Campus, the faculty combines classroom teaching with laboratory work and independent research. Its programmes prepare graduates to contribute to Somalia’s natural resource management, technology, industry and education sectors.
Today, the Faculty of Science offers undergraduate programmes through its five departments, with a learning approach that is collaborative and student-centred. Students work closely with specialised professors on independent research and hands-on laboratory projects, building both scientific knowledge and practical skills. Looking ahead, the faculty aims to become an important centre of research in Somalia and East Africa, equipping graduates with the academic and research skills they need to succeed in the marketplace and contribute to national development.
Departments
The Faculty of Science contains five departments:
Geology
The Department of Geology studies the Earth, its history and its dynamic processes. It prepares graduates in geological research, environmental science and resource management, with the skills to address geological hazards and support the sustainable use of Somalia’s natural resources.
Marine Science
The Department of Marine Science was established in 2019. It provides training in marine biology, oceanography and marine technology, preparing graduates for careers in marine conservation, environmental protection and sustainable fisheries management along Somalia’s long coastline.
Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics focuses on the study of numbers, quantity, space, patterns and structures. It develops critical thinking, problem-solving and quantitative skills that are valuable in academia, industry, finance and government, and it supports other fields across science and technology.
Computer Science
The Department of Computer Science prepares students in programming, computing systems and problem-solving. It aims to produce graduates who can develop technology solutions and support Somalia’s digital transformation.
Applied Chemistry
The Department of Applied Chemistry was founded in 2023 and takes a multidisciplinary approach, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratory experience. It prepares graduates for careers in industrial chemistry, food chemistry, environmental chemistry, research and teaching.
Programs
The Faculty of Science currently offers five undergraduate programs.
Bachelor of Science in Geology
An undergraduate programme that prepares students to investigate Earth’s processes, hazards and resources through scientific study and research.
Bachelor of Science in Marine Science
An undergraduate programme that prepares students to study, conserve and sustainably manage marine ecosystems and resources.
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
An undergraduate programme that builds strong analytical and quantitative skills through the study of pure and applied mathematics.
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
An undergraduate programme that prepares students to design, build and manage computing solutions for real-world problems.
Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry
An undergraduate programme that prepares students for work in chemical industries, food quality, environmental monitoring, research and academia.
