Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry

About The Faculty

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine & Animal Husbandry is one of the oldest and most distinguished faculties of Somali National University (SNU). Established in 1973, the Faculty was founded to address Somalia’s growing need for qualified veterinary professionals and animal production specialists capable of supporting the country’s livestock sector, which remains a cornerstone of the national economy.

Since its establishment, the Faculty has played a significant role in producing skilled graduates who have contributed to animal health, livestock production, veterinary public health, and rural development across Somalia. During the 1980s, the Faculty earned a strong reputation for academic excellence, research, and the provision of technical and extension services to livestock producers, government institutions, and local communities.

Following the reopening of Somali National University, the Faculty resumed its academic programs with a renewed commitment to excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement. Today, it offers undergraduate degree programs in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, supported by qualified academic staff, modern teaching approaches, and practical field-based learning.

The Faculty continues to strengthen its academic capacity through research, partnerships, and collaboration with national and international institutions. By integrating scientific knowledge with practical training, it prepares graduates to address emerging challenges in animal health, food safety, livestock production, disease prevention, and sustainable agricultural development.

As Somalia’s livestock sector continues to drive economic growth and livelihoods, the Faculty remains dedicated to producing competent professionals, advancing scientific research, and contributing to national development through quality education and innovation.
